Research: -A study of the effects of adopting school uniforms in Long Beach, CA reported the following effects from the switch to uniforms: 1)Overall, the crime rates dropped by 91% 2) School suspensions dropped by 90% 3) Sex offenses were reduced by 96% 4)Incidents of vandalism went down 69%
Main Point: School safety would improve
Research: -Proponents of school uniforms claim that school safety would be improved through a mandatory uniform policy. Gang type clothing would be eliminiated. Crimes such as theft of expensive clothing or footwearwould be sustantially reduced( Mcdaniel, 1996) Also, intruders in school could easily be spotted if all the students were wearing a similar style of dress (forbes, 1994)
Here's the rebuttals: 1) Inappropriate acts would not affect the school image -You are seeing this advantage from the wrong perspective. While it is true that the school would benefit by not getting thier image ruined, this only happens when the student misbehaves. -In any case that the student shows a good example, the public would not be able to recognise them.
2)Students would have their freedom to have thier own styles -Fashion trends constantly change every year, some last as short as a week. Therefore keeping up with fashion trends can be very expensive, even for the higher-class families.Parents feel the pressure to when trying to provide their children with latest peer-pleasing designs. -Uniform also prevent the child from choosing the 'wrong' fashion, ending up in more ridicule and humiliation.
3)Trouble of identification if not seen clearly -Possibility of discrimination can easily be minimized IF the school can get along well. While in countries outside of Singapore, the 'alien' races are discriminated, generally in Singapore we can even bring the case to court if it becomes too severe.
